In Germany after WW1, a feeling of defeat is ever present. For one young woman, that grief extends to going to the cemetery every day to mourn the loss of her betrothed.

One day, she meets a mysterious Frenchman who visits her fiance’s grave to lay flowers. The two young people try to find a spark of friendship but the locals seethe with resentment, especially the families who have lost their sons to war, and thereby their legacies.

French filmmaker Francois Ozon reminds us of the adage, “the first casualty of war is truth.” He does so in a way that beguiles but also bedevils.
