The title refers to the staging of an historic Keith Jarrett concert in Köln, Germany in 1975, which took place seemingly against all odds. The story is a biographical account of Vera Brandes, who somewhat accidentally became a promoter of jazz music at the age of 16, in defiance of her family’s wishes. Traveling to Berlin for a jazz festival, she hears Keith Jarret for the first time and is determined to bring him to Köln to play at the Opera House.
What ensues is a portrayal of Vera’s indomitable will, sheer grit, and power of persuasion. Vera is able to persuade a reluctant Keith Jarrett, convince a skeptical opera house manager, corral piano tuners, and ultimately sell out the house. This joyful film demonstrates the power of perseverance and the magic of music.
