Recipient of a ten-minute standing ovation at Cannes, Capernaum (Chaos) tells the story of a Lebanese boy whose life is so hard, so despairing, that he eventually sues his negligent parents for the “crime” of allowing him to be born. The film follows him from gutsy, streetwise child, to hardened twelve-year-old “adult” surviving on the streets, to jail for a violent crime, to finally seeking justice in a courtroom. Shot without professional actors and with raw cinematography, the film is a revelation about the dark side of the survival of poor children in Lebanon. It is a powerful statement on grotesque inequality and human misery, about survival in the toughest and most heartbreaking of situations. Be prepared to be moved.
