Ahmet is a 15-year-old boy living in a remote village in northern Macedonia, who is trying to find his own way amidst the strictures of his father’s expectations and the time-worn traditions of the culture. Forced to leave school and tend the family’s sheep, he finds solace in music and love in the person of Aya, who has returned from school in Germany to face an arranged marriage.
The characters are portrayed authentically and Ahmet is especially charming and also tender, in his infatuation with Aya and his special relationship with his younger brother. This award-winning film is a delightful portrayal of a coming-of-age story and the clash between both cultural and generational norms.
