Best actress Oscar nominee Fernanda Torres plays Eunice Paiva, whose husband, a political dissident whose activities had been unknown to her, disappears at the hands of Brazil’s military dictatorship in 1971 after a raid of their home. Eunice herself is arrested and tortured due to inquiries about her husband. She is forced to move the family to Sao Paulo and provide a home for her five children as well as devoting her efforts to discovering the fate of her husband. She eventually becomes a lawyer and an expert on Indigenous rights in Brazil.
Based on a memoir written by the couple’s son Marcelo, the film also received the Oscar for International Feature Film and a nomination for Best Picture, among other awards. Critics have universally lauded Fernanda Torres’ performance and call the film “remarkable, history-making and sublime.”
