A Cannes and multiple award winner, this film oscillates between humor, warmth and despair as it follows the plight of those forced to deal with a heartless government civil service. After suffering a heart-attack, a 59-year-old carpenter tries to navigate the mindless, crushing bureaucracy in order to receive an Employment and Support Allowance. He befriends a single mother and her two kids as they all try to make their way through the impersonal, Kafkaesque benefits system. A powerful, moving film experience.
What makes the pain of this film bearable is Daniel’s unquenchable decency, courage and perseverance.
