Embrace of the Serpent

Colombia 2015, 125 min, drama. Spanish & other languages with English subtitles. Director: Ciro Guerra

Photo still from 'Sing Street'

This extraordinary adventure, based on a true story, follows a charismatic tribal shaman as he helps two scientists, 40 years apart, search for plants in the Amazon. Both sorcerer and saint, this proud yet tragic being struggles against the unstoppable current of history.

As the men snake their way up the river, this poetic, hypnotic film explores the devouring of a culture by colonialism. Shot in stunning black and white, this is simply a unique work of art.

At once blistering and poetic, not just an ethnographic study but also a striking act of cinematic witness. — Justin Chang, Variety.
