Dheepan

France 2015, 115 min, crime/drama. Tamil and French with English subtitles.
Director: Jacques Audiard

Photo still from 'Dheepan'

"Jacques Audiard’s superb drama... rises to the challenge with the power of art and not a scintilla of sentimentality.” — Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal

This searing French film follows a Tamil “family” from Sri Lanka to Paris where its members must use their hard-won survival skills to navigate a whole new world. Having escaped the chaos of civil war they find another kind of chaos in their crime-ridden housing complex.

A Cannes winner, Dheepan’s conclusion was controversial, with viewers questioning meanings and motivations. Intriguingly, it ends as it begins.
