A Brilliant Young Mind [x+y]

UK 2014, 111min, comedy/drama.
Director: Morgan Matthews

"Take the story of a young maths prodigy, add three notable performances, subtract any of the by-the-numbers mawkishness you might expect, and the result is X+Y." Daily Mirror

Nathan, a mildly autistic teenage math prodigy, finds safety and satisfaction in numbers. With the help of an unconventional teacher he lands a spot on the British team for the International Mathematics Olympiad.

When the team travels to a training camp in Taiwan, Nathan struggles to overcome his insecurity and social disability. But he also finds himself surrounded by kindred spirits who open him to the possibility of understanding his condition and perhaps changing it.

From suburban England to bustling Taipei and back again, this original and heart-warming film tracks the funny and complex relationships that Nathan builds, as he is confronted by the irrational nature of love.

This film was originally released as "x+y" in the UK.

"As Nathan, Butterfield, who impressed in Hugo and the underrated Ender’s Game, is ably guided by director Morgan Matthews, who draws on his Bafta-nominated documentary Beautiful Young Minds for insight into Nathan’s place on the spectrum of neurodevelopmental disorders. The result is rather charming, often funny, occasionally surprising and consistently heartwarming." The Guardian
