GIBSONS February 16
Japan, 2013, 122min, drama. Japanese (English subtitles)
Directed by Hirokazu Koreeda.
Reshaping a classic babies-switched-at-birth plot into a thoughtful exploration of the meaning of parenthood, Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Like Father, Like Son is a low-key but supple treatment of familial bonds, expectations and responsibilities that reverberates with heartrending impact. The age-old nature-vs.-nurture debate emerges naturally from a comparison between two boys, two very different families and two fathers. Ryota Nonomiya is a successful businessman driven by money and status while his counterpart is his opposite but each must make the same life changing decision. However, it’s the story’s intense focus on one father’s intimacy issues and redemptive transformation that makes the film so moving.
