Austria/France/Germany 2012, 122 min, drama. French with English subtitles.
Director: Michael Haneke
This Oscar-winning film is in turn intimate, brave, and ultimately devastating. Anne (Emmanuelle Riva) and Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant)—retired music teachers living comfortably in Paris, with occasional visits from their daughter (Isabelle Huppert)—find their world irrevocably shattered when Anne begins to exhibit symptoms of a stroke. As she slips ever further away, Georges struggles to care of her in the home they have shared for so long.
A magisterial work about devotion and mortality, Amour is a staggering, intensely moving look at old age and life’s end.
Surviving “Amour”. Review by Hannah Goldfield, in the New Yorker, February 26, 2013.
Academy Award: Best Foreign Language Film of the Year, 2012; Cannes: Palme d'Or 2012; Broadcast Film Critics Association Award for Best Foreign Language Film; and many others.
