The Closet

France 2001, 84 min, comedy. French with English subtitles.
Director: Francis Veber.

Milquetoast François Pignon (Daniel Auteuil), a nondescript divorced accountant, still in love with his ex-wife and wanting a better relationship with their son, learns that he is to be fired. A neighbour suggests that he pretend to be gay, so that company executives — including boss Mlle Bertrand (Michèle Laroque) and office bully Félix Santini (Gérard Depardieu) — will be unable to fire him for fear of sexual discrimination charges. The plan works, but Francois must keep up the improbable charade in order to save his job and transform his life.

Of course, nothing happens as it should, but the consequences to the lives of Pignon and others are profound.

"The Closet is a bonbon spiked with mirth and malice." — Peter Travers, Rolling Stone.
