Leave Them Laughing: A Musical Comedy about Dying
Canada/USA, 2010, 90 min, documentary
Jack Smith, the father of Carla Zilbersmith, will be in attendance to introduce the film and answer questions.
Leave Them Laughing is a humorous yet raw documentary by filmmaker John Zaritsky about one woman’s battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, or ALS, “this fatal motor-neuron affliction results in progressive paralysis and - having no cure - leaves patients with little left to hope for but the possibility of joy in their last years, months, days of life.”*
You would expect this story to be pure tragedy but this woman happens to be Carla Zilbersmith a musician and comedian. She and her teenage son Mac approach her fight with humor and integrity. By using humor it allows them to face the otherwise unbearable truths of living with a terminal illness.
“A journalist asked me what I wanted to do before I died, and I quite naturally answered: Johnny Depp.” — Carla Zilbersmith.
She allows the filmmakers an incredibly intimate and unobstructed view of her struggle and often documents the events herself. As we follow Carla’s journey we are treated to pieces of her performances and are enlightened by Carla’s perspectives on life, family, illness and death.
Looking for inspiration? This is likely the film for you. To quote Carla’s
son’s eulogy... What can you do for Carla? “Live the shit out of
your life. That’s what it’s for, isn’t it?”
