Goodbye Solo - still shots from the filmGoodbye Solo

USA, 2008, 91 min, comedy, drama
Writer/Director: Ramin Bahrani

Goodbye Solo is a charming film about an unexpected friendship between two men who have very different outlooks on life.

Solo is a kind-hearted 34-year-old Senegalese taxi driver, whose real aspiration is to become a flight attendant. Equipped with indomitable optimism, Solo’s sunny outlook is contagious.

One night while working, he is hired by William, a 70-year-old southerner battling depression, who has an unusual request: in two weeks' time he wants to be driven to a mountaintop from which he intends to jump to his death. In the hopes of persuading William to relinquish his death wish, Solo befriends him and the odd couple's serendipitous friendship grows. Thus Solo embarks on the task of imparting his love of life to William before it is too late.

The film is a celebration of life, a fascinating parable about respect and dignity.
